      Day 6: Sun Jul 27, 1997

Spent most of the day getting ready for an overnight backpack trip. Went to Surplus Store and got a few items, rain jackets and sandals for Sharleen and I. We got a really late start and went to Quenella Pass at 11,660 feet, parked the car, and headed west on a pack trail. We started about 7:30 in somewhat cloudy weather. We hiked until somewhat after 8 pm, found a couple small lakes, which looked like good water sources and found a good tent site. The entire hike was above the timberline and was fairly cool. The campsite had a snowfield on the hill behind it. I'm guessing we hiked about 1 1/2 miles. It was getting dark as we set up the tents, and was too dark for photos. I fired up the camp stove, seemed to burn a bit different, maybe the altitude, which would be around 11,800 feet or so. We had some food from dehydrated cups and I took our water bag down to the lake and got some water in it. Left the water bag sitting on the grass near the tent all night, also left the stove on a nearby rock. The water bag is funny, when you set it down it spreads out like a pancake, but still holds the water. Our tent site was close to the pack trail but nobody was around and it was very isolated for the night. We finally got in our tents and got the sleeping bags arranged. About that time Sharleen decided she needed to go back outside, when she did she was amazed to see lots of stars in what had been an overcast sky. I didn't sleep too well for some reason, maybe the altitude.
