1996 Sep 05 00:56 UT

This image was aquired by NOAA 12 at 00:56 UT over the western U.S. This was an evening pass.
Map of the pass
Channel 3 view of the data Clouds are black over the center and eastern side. On the western side they are partially illuminated by the low sun.

This pass does not cover the far west well and clouds obscure some of the area covered. The fire in central Idaho was seen through breaks in the clouds but no images of it are shown here. The main fires seen in this pass are in Wyoming and southern Montana.

Wyoming

The channel 3 image shows the fire on the northeast side of the Bighorn Mountains is quite visible. Other fires are visible on the north border near the northwest corner, at the top edge of the image in southern Montana, and near the north shore of Yellowstone Lake. A bright area is seen in east central Wyoming, southeast of the Bighorn fire and another near the center of the western border. The reality of these is not certain from this image.

Yellowstone area

The channel 3 images shows at least 3 fires through broken clouds. The one on the northern border was visible before. A newer one is to it's northeast. The fire near the north shore of Yellowstone Lake is still burning. A large bright area south of Jackson, Wy. is seen in the channel 3 image but not labeled on the hot spot map. It's status is also uncertain from this view.

The low sun gives enough illumination to confuse the channel 3 images a bit but not enough to make a useful color composite. The clouds also cause poor results for the color composite.

A channel 3 image from Sep 03 helps clarify what is seen in this image. The fire in northern Yellowstone is seen well and the fire to it's northeast is also visible as a small bright area. The bright spot south of Jackson, Wy. is also visible and is most likely a real fire.
