This image was aquired by NOAA 12 at 01:19 UT over the western U.S. This was an evening pass.
Map of the pass
Channel 3 view of the data Clouds are black over the center and eastern side. On the western side they are partially illuminated by the low sun.


Parts of this pass were clouded. Fire activity was not seen (at this scale) in Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, or Colorado. The fire in north Yellowstone was barely visible and is not shown here.

AVHRR Channel 3.

The color composite image shows some smoke still coming from the fires near Yosemite National Park near the top of the image. Two small smoke plumes are visible farther south in the Sierras, one shows well on the channel 3 image, the other is barely visible.

Salt Lake area

Color composite image using channels 1, 2, and 3.
This view shows the scene illuminated by a very low sun, only about 8 degrees above the western horizon (see the pass map). A faint smoke plume is visible originating from the fires near the small town of Promontory, UT. The fires may be located clearly on the images below.

Fire detection

The channel 3 image shows two fire areas near the northeast edge of Great Salt Lake. The Hot Spot Finder Map shows the small town of Promontory, UT. Some of the fire areas were not tagged by the fire detection software but show well in channel 3.
