Solar Proton Penetration into the High-Latitude
Ionosphere: Cutoff Latitudes

Purpose:
To determine which regions of Earth's polar ionosphere are bombarded with solar energetic particles as a function of conditions in the interplanetary medium. These particles alter the conductivity of Earth's ionosphere interrupting communications and at very high latitudes represent a radiation hazard.

Input:
Magnetic field model and input parameters (solar wind dynamic pressure, DST, solar wind By+Bz).

Output:
Contours representing equatorial edge of penetrating energetic protons (1-300 Mev). The contours can be viewed on polar and orthographic projections of Earth's surface.
