Auroral Boundary and Particle Precipitation Nowcasting Software System

Purpose: Sample Auroral
            Boundary Image
To provide AFSWC the capability to monitor the auroral oval position. Specifically it tracks the equatorward and poleward edges using multi-point measurements whenever possible. Additionally, a one hour forecast of auroral power is made based on the particle precipitation data (specifically using the polar cap size and the ion isotropy boundary). The latter data is also used to calculate an equivalent instantaneous Kp.

Input:
The DMSP particle data available at AFSWC.

Output:
A pair of images depicting the geographic position of the auroral oval for both the northern and southern hemispheres, along with the inferred Kp and a "green light/yellow light" forecast.
