UARS

A team headed by Dr. Brian J. Anderson (brian_anderson@jhuapl.edu) is responsible for the magnetic field measurements onboard the UARS spacecraft. The vector magnetomenter (VMAG) is part of the Particle Environment Monitor (PEM) instrument cluster from SwRI. The stability of the UARS platform has allowed exceptional measurements of the geomagnetic field and allows detailed work on the perturbations to the main field from external current systems.

If your browser supports fill-out forms, you can take advantange of our Summary Plots of high-latitude passes. This tool allows access to line plots/polar dials showing the perturbation magnetic field vector during non-quiessent conditions. We have cataloged the majority of the UARS mission in this archive. You may also browse the Summary Plots directly, without going through the fill-out forms interface.

Here is a small, fuzzy version of a Summary Plot.

1 second averaged data are available online.

Data Requests: UARS magnetic field data can be made available via anonymous ftp upon request. Types and quantities of available data are subject to change.

Space Weather Case Studies

FAC image

A series of FAC "images" has been prepared based upon the magnetic field fluctuations below 50 Hz. The procedure is also used with the Freja spacecraft to allow near real-time Space Weather Monitoring.
