From its 388-mile (625-kilometer) circular orbit, TIMED will study the influences of the sun and humans on the least explored and understood region of Earthís atmosphere - a gateway between Earth's environment and space. Employing advances in remote-sensing technology, TIMED's instruments - working with a worldwide network of ground-based observation sites - will obtain the first-ever global measurements of this atmospheric region. TIMED's Mission Operations Center, in Laurel, Md., will downlink raw data from the spacecraft and send it to four remote Payload Operations Centers where data products will be created.
