The SPDML schema has been defined by drawing on a variety of different sources identified here:

SPASE (Space Physics Archive Search and Extract) is developing a data dictionary defining all terms and keywords used in their system.
The CDPP (Center de Donnees de la Physique des Plasmas has defined an Interoperability between Independent Space Physics Data Centers.
ISTP/IACG has defined guidelines for CDF data usable by the science community and accessible through the CDAWeb Display and Retrieval system.
A Multi-Discipline Metadata Registry for Science Interoperability
TIMED (Thermosphere, Ionosphere, Mesosphere, Energetics and Dynamics data catalog.
XSIL (Extensible Scientific Interchange Language which provides a basic syntactic structure for scientific data.
XDF (eXtensible Data Format) is a common scientific data format based on XML and general math principles that can be used throughout the scientific disciplines.
UBL (Universal Business Language) defines an XML vocabulary for electronic commerce.
ESML (Earth Science Markup Language provides an "interchange technology that enables data (both structural and semantic) interoperatiliby" with applications without enforcing a standard format within the Earth Science community.
FGDC (Federal Geographic Data Committee) has defined a Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM).
DIF (Directory Interchange Format) is a data structure used to exchange directory-level information about data sets among information systems. The DIF is compatible with the FGDC Content Standard on Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM).
