Overview of the MIDL Project

Our mission:

to provide the space physics community with intuitive, mission independent, web-based tools for analyzing energetic particle data

View slide show presentation giving an overview of the project.

Goals

  1. create a programming interface which defines a uniform way to access EPD data from multiple missions
  2. develop plotting and analysis tools which use the generic interface
  3. make multiple missions available thorugh this format
  4. put the tools and data on the web, providing access to any EPD data, anytime, anywhere

Methods

  1. capture the essence of EPD data by defining mission independent parameters which can describe common elements of most EPD datasets
  2. translate the parameterized description into a Java interface, which provides uniform access to the varying formats of different missions
  3. use of Java for data reading and analysis tools enables portable, web-based software
  4. develop tools in close contact with scientific user community to ensure relevance and utility

Progress

  1. the mission independent paramters have been identified and defined, with the exception of some details about the representation of instrumental solid angle coverage
  2. the programming API has been created and documented
  3. several first generation analysis tools have been developed based soley on the programming API
  4. data conversion has been completed for Isee-1, and is currently underway for Isee-2, GEOTAIL
  5. data conversion for AMPTE/CCE will soon commence
