Geotail/EPIC Summary Image Descriptions

Summary image name: Particle Spectrogram plus MAG

This summary image style provides a 24 hour overview of the data. Each day's image contains several panels, where each panel contains a specific type of plot which helps characterize the data for that day. The top panel provides an energy spectrogram for ICS ions (which are mostly protons). The next panel shows an energy spectrogram of STIC protons. Then there is a panel showing the magnetic field behavior. The black line is dB/B, which is the RMS error in a (roughly) 300 second interval divided by the average B-field magnitude in that same interval. The red line is the lattitudinal direction of the B-field in GSE coordinates.

At the bottom of the image is a timeline and a set of spacecraft positions for various points along the timeline.

Summary image name: Standard Data Product C1

A 12 hour static plot showing showing color spectrograms of ion energy vs. time.

From the top, the panels in the summary image are as follows:

  • an energy spectrogram using ICS energy channels E3 through E16
  • a velocity spectrogram using ICS TOF channels T16 through T3
  • a mass / charge intensity plot for different species
  • an energy spectrogram for ICS different energies in ICS CNO channels
  • a STICS hydrogen energy spectrogram
  • a magnetic field panel showing in black dB over B, which is the RMS deviation of the magnetic field over a fixed interval, divided by the average in the same interval

At the bottom is the time in UT hours for the day, and then below that are the spacecraft coordinates in GSE and GSM
