Plot Label Menu

There is one Plot Label Menu for each defined Plot Definition Menu. The menu is created silently that is it does not pop immediately up onto the screen. It is added to the Menu List in the lower section of the Control Panel and can be brought to the foreground from that listing.

This menu contains all options applicable for selecting and positioning top-level menu labels; that is all labels which are not specifically associated with the plot axes. The options control which labels are to be displayed, how they are to be formatted and where they should be placed with respect to the plots and what color to output them. Also contained in this menu are options to control the spacing between the individual plots within a Plot Definition.

Note: All top-label plot labels are defaulted to off. Those plot labels which are considered necessary to the plot must be toggled on.

The default Plot Label Menu appears as.

Main Section Menu Options

Label Format Options
The format options control the label output. The options vary with the different label types.

TIME LABEL allows
control of all time information with the exception of the times associated
with a time-based axis. This falls into two categories. For plots which
do not have time-based axis, this option allows time to be added to the
plot. Plots with a time-based axis have time labels automatically added
to the time-based axis. These labels consist only of the varying portion
of the time. The leading constant time fields are by default output to
the left of the axis labels. This label can be suppressed or replaced
with the full start time of the plot with the latter being able to be
positioned any location available through the menu options.

The Time Label format options are:

Option Definition
OMIT No Label is output. For plots with a time-based axis the default constant portion of the label times will be output.
BEGIN Show the starting time of plot only. For plots with a time-based axis the default constant portion of the label times will be suppressed.
BEGIN/END Show starting and ending time of plot. For plots with a time-based axis the default constant portion of the label times will be suppressed.
SUPPRESS For plots with a time-based axis only. This will suppress the default constant portion of the label times.

DATA LABEL and
Source Label are coupled options which display the
measurement names and UDF sources associated with all of the measurements
output with a Plot Definition. Either the DATA LABEL or
the SOURCE LABEL maybe be suppressed in the output but when both
are present they are output as a single label with the Source Label
proceeding the Data Label.

When a plot contains multiple measurements the labels are stacked. In addition if the plot is a line plot each label will have appended to it the Y-Axis against which the quantity is being plotted as: [L] for Left-Y Axis and [R] for Right-Y Axis. Measurements which consist of a number of merged quantities will have an [M] appended to their labels.

The Data Label format options are:

Option Definition
OMIT No Label is output
SHOW Output Labels

SOURCE LABEL
allows the the UDF source of a measurement to be coupled to its
Data Label if the Data Label Format option
is set to SHOW or to be output on its own if the Data Label
Format option has been set to OMIT. The Source Label
is an important option in missions such as CLUSTER II where with four
satellites carrying identical instrumentation, the same measurement
name may occur on multiple spacecraft.

Note: When the Data Label is enabled, all of the Source Label fields other than the FORMAT option are muted. The options for these fields are taken from the Data Label fields.

The Source Label Format options are:

Option Definition
OMIT No Label is output

COLLAPSE LABEL>
is applicable only when a UDF vector measurement is being plotted
as scalar value, that is in a line plot format. In this case the label
provides both the range over which the array was collapsed and whether
the resultant scalar value was obtained by a simple average of the data
within the range or by an integration of the data over the range. If
this label is turned on and no collapse is being performed in any of
the selected Plot Definition sources, nothing is output.

The Collapse Label Format options are:

Option Definition
OMIT No Label is output
FULL Output the full collapse label which consists of the type of collapse, the limits, and the units associated with the limits.
B-E (U) Output the an abbreviated collapse label which consists of the limits, and the units associated with the limits.
B-E Output the an abbreviated collapse label which consists of the limits only.
C (U) Output the an abbreviated collapse label which consists of the limit center value, and the units associated with the center value.
C Output the an abbreviated collapse label which consists of the limit center value only.

TOOL LABELS displays
a set of labels identifying all of the Plot
Tools being applied in the Plot Definition

The Tool Label Format options are:

Option Definition
OMIT No Label is output
SHOW Output Labels
LSHELL ONLY Outputs only labels associated with LSHELL projection options under the Plot Globe or Plot Object Tools.

CONTOUR LABELS
displays information concerning the plane on which a 3D contour
is being output on. The information includes: the axis selected
to rotate the plane normal to; the three Euler rotation angles and
the translation taken along the Z axis.

The Contour Label Format options are:

Option Definition
OMIT No Label is output
SHOW Output Labels

Axis Options
AXIS sets the axis along which the label is to be displayed. The options are:

Option Definition
BOTTOM X Label is output along the lower X axis.
TOP X Label is output along the upper X axis.
LEFT Y Label is output along the left Y axis.
RIGHT Y Label is output along the right Y axis.

Labels output against either Y axis which are centered (see next option)
are rotated to be parallel to that axis running from the lower to upper
X-Axis if against the left Y-axis and from the upper to lower X-Axis
when output against the right Y-axis.

Position Options
POSITION defines the coarse position at which the label is output along the selected axis. The options are:

Option Definition
SPREAD Labels are output two per line, the first label left justified against the left Plot Offset boundary, the second label right justified against the right Plot Offset boundary.
MINIMUM Labels left justified against the left Plot Offset boundary. All labels are output parallel to the X-Axis regardless of the AXIS selection.
CENTER Labels centered in the plot window defined through the Plot Offset options. If the AXIS option was one of the Y-AXIS selections the label will be output parallel to the Y-Axis.
MAXIMUM Labels right justified against the right Plot Offset boundary. All labels are output parallel to the X-Axis regardless of the AXIS selection.

Occurrence Options
OCCURRENCE defines the number of times a label is to be output. The options are:

Option Definition
ONCE Label is output once, that being for the first plot in the Plot Definition. If there are multiple groups of plots defined then the label is output only in the first plot group and then only once.
ONCE/PLOT Label is output once per plot.
ONCE/COL Label is output in the upper plot in each column of plots in the Plot Definition
ONCE/ROW Label is output in the left plot in each row of plots in the Plot Definition
ONCE/GRP Label is output once for each defined plot group. There is only one plot group defined this option is identical to the ONCE Option above.

X-Offset Options
X-OFFSET defines the fine placement of the label in the X direction. This is a delta from the coarse label placement. The offset is specified in units of the current character size, with 1.0 being the width of one character. A positive value shifts the label to the right in X and a negative value shifts the label to the left.

Y-Offset Options
Y-OFFSET defines a fine placement of the label in the Y direction. This is a delta from the coarse label placement. The offset is specified in units of the current character size, with 1.0 being the width of one character. A positive value shifts the label up in Y and a negative value shifts the label down.

Size Options
SIZE defines the label size. Valid sizes run from 3 to 32767 with character size increasing with value. As a general rule of thumb 12-25 is a good selection. At a label size of 1000 a single character will completely fill the plot page.

Color Options
COLOR sets the label color. There are 8 basic colors to select from. This option is ignored for Data Labels which are associated with measurements in a line plot. In this case the Label Color is automatically set to the color of the trace associated with the measurement.

Plot Spacing
PLOT SPACING defines the blank space to be left between individual plots in a PLOT DEFINITION. The default is for all plots within the matrix of plots in a PLOT DEFINITION to abut one another.

DX sets the spacing between plots in adjacent columns in a matrix of plots. The spacing is specified in units of characters, with 1.0 being the width of one character. A character size of 15 is used to determine the character width.

DY sets the spacing between plots in adjacent rows in a matrix of plots. The spacing is specified in units of characters, with 1.0 being the width of one character. A character size of 15 is used to determine the character width.

TOP sets the spacing between the first row of plots in the current Plot Definition from the last row of plots in the preceding Plot Definition. The spacing is specified in units of characters, with 1.0 being the width of one character. A character size of 15 is used to determine the character width.

Output Labels
>OUTPUT LABELS allows the default axis labeling scheme to be defeated. Under the default labeling scheme only labels along the Y axis of plots in the left-most or right most column of plots and along X-Axis of plots along the bottom row in the last Plot Definition are output.

X sets the labeling scheme for the X-Axis of the plots in the Plot Definition. The options are:

Option Definition
DEFAULT Use the default labeling scheme.
ALL Label the X-Axis of all plots.
LOWEST Label the X-Axis of all plots in the bottom row of the plot matrix only.

LEFT Y sets the labeling scheme for the Left Y-Axis of the plots in the Plot Definition. The options are:

Option Definition
DEFAULT Use the default labeling scheme.
ALL Label the Left Y-Axis of all plots.

RIGHT Y sets the labeling scheme for the Right Y-Axis of the plots in the Plot Definition. The options are:

Option Definition
DEFAULT Use the default labeling scheme.
ALL Label the Right Y-Axis of all plots.

Label Style
LABEL STYLE set the format used in displaying the axis definition label and the corresponding units label for each of the labeled axis.

X sets the labeling format for the X-Axis of the plots in the Plot Definition. The options are:

Option Definition
LINEAR The axis definition label and units label occur on the same line
STACKED The axis definition label is output one line above the units label.

LEFT Y sets the labeling format for the Left Y-Axis of the plots in the Plot Definition. The options are:

Option Definition
LINEAR The axis definition label and units label occur on the same line
STACKED The axis definition label is output one line above the units label.

RIGHT Y sets the labeling format for the Right Y-Axis of the plots in the Plot Definition. The options are:

Option Definition
LINEAR The axis definition label and units label occur on the same line
STACKED The axis definition label is output one line above the units label.

Option Effects

The following examples show some of the effects obtainable through the
Plot Label settings.

Default Menu Options

With just the default menu options, there are no plot labels (other than the axis labels and the constant time label).

Data and Time Labels

Data Labels are added to be output centered along the right Y-axis. The constant portion of the Time Label is suppressed and in its place the starting time of the plot is output outside the plot at the top left.

This produces

Source Label, Label Style, Plot Spacing

A Source Label in included in this set of plots. Plot spacing is used in both X and Y to separate the plots. The Label Style is set to produce linear axis labels. The Begin Time of each plot is output along the inside right Y-axis.
