GEOTAIL/EPIC contributions. Welcome to the GEOTAIL/EPIC instrument team constributions to the Geospace Environment Modeling (GEM) Tail/Substorm Campaign Working Group 1 (WG1). This distribution is based at the JHU/APL Space Department where the EPIC instrument was partly built. Two GEM messenger circulars describe the activities of Tail-Substorm campaign WG1 and its relation to other working groups and the GEM initiative. The first circular describes the decision of the GEM steering committee to form the various working groups and the second circular describes the decisions that the Tail-Substorm WG1 reached at the June 27-July 1, 1994 GEM meeting in Snowmass, Colorado.
EPIC contributions to the Tail-Substorm campaign WG1 are in form of color plots of energy spectrograms and angular spectrograms for the selected periods. File key describes the format of the plots and image keyforspectra describes some additional aspects of the energy spectrograms. The EPIC plots in gif format reside in directories Period1_011194-011494 for the first GEM-Tail-Substorm WG1 campaign and in Period2_031793-032693 for the second campaign. An explanatory text that points out the most noteworthy features of the plots strictly from the EPIC instrument's point of view exists in file epictimeline.
You can obtain a postcript version of the EPIC plots from our anonymous ftp site: ftp to aplsp-ftp.jhuapl.edu and login as "anonymous" with your e-mail address as password. Once you are logged on you have to change directory to "pub/geotail/export/GEM_TS_WG1". The files are in two directories: "Period1_011194-011494" and "Period2_031793-032693". Both compressed (to be ftped as binary) and uncompressed (to be ftped as ascii) versions of the plots exist in these directories.
According to the guidelines deliniated in the recent GEM meeting, the EPIC images are to be used for establishing conjuctions and selecting interesting periods and events for further analysis. Naturally, they are not meant for publication as they are standardized plots produced by "hands-off" procedures. The APL/EPIC team will be happy to assist in the interpretation of the images and the time correlation between the EPIC signatures and signatures on other instruments.
