Polar UVI Substorm Movies

movie_still

UVI substorm movies were prepared by K. Liou and P. Newell. The Principal Investgator of the UVI instrument on the NASA satellite "Polar" is George Parks of the University of Washington, Seattle. C. Meng is the official NASA Co-Investigator for the UVI at APL. Two filters are used, LBH(Lyman-Birge_Hopfield)-Long and LBH-Short. The LBHL filter is proportional to total energy flux (insensitive to particle energy) while the LBHS line is more sensitive to soft precipitation.

These MPEG movies were prepared by J. Skura of JHU/APL by programming in IDL to create morphing software to connect frames. Only 36 second duration images were used, with about one frame every 1.5 minutes of UT. Scientific questions should be directed to Dr. P. Newell or Dr. K. Liou, while web questions should be directed to the webmaster.

The general public can view a Sample Movie .

The MPEG movie are generated from UVI images one hour before and one hour after the onset of the substorm. A red line is drawn on the images to roughly indicate the field of view. To view the movie for a specific onset time, first choose the year from the choices below

1996
1997

A list of approximately 1800 auroral breakups (from 1996 - 1999) has been compiled by Dr. K. Liou and can be obtained from here.

Polar UVI substorm movies have been supported by NASA Polar grants and NSF grants (ATM-0001665 and ATM-0318606).
