The goal of the
OVATION project is to create a "standard" for the auroral oval size,
position, and intensity of precipitation. OVATION includes both
historical data (back to December 1983) and real-time nowcasting (only data
from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, MSP is currently available
real-time, although SuperDARN radar-determined boundaries and other real-time
data should soon be included). All data sets incorporated must be (1)
Long-running and (2) Cross-calibrated to previously defined DMSP boundaries,
using specific procedures. The OVATION project welcomes additional data
sources, please contact Patrick Newell or Thomas Sotirelis for more
information.
OVATION is sponsored by UPOS (University Partnering for Operational Support), and includes the results of research sponsored by NSF, by AFOSR and by NASA. Work on OVATION has been conducted by scientists at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, and at the Air Force Research Laboratory.
OVATION is supported by NSF grants ATM-0222411 (P. Newell) and ATM-0004365 (T. Sotirelis).
