Online DMSP Data Retriever: Step 1

Data for the Air Force DMSP satellites are available here. Data is available from December 1983 through 08 April 2001. Select a date, and we will tell you which satellites have data for that date. Then you select the satellite from which to download the data. Data files can be in excess of 3 megebytes (MB), so the user has the option of zipping (compressing) the data file to speed up the data download. A zipped or compressed file will be approximately 1/4 the size of the unzipped (uncompressed) file.

Packages to perform unzipping or uncompressing of the files are available for the following systems :

GNUZIP for UNIX   or   WINZIP for WINDOWS

It will take several seconds to receive the data.

Caution:
The low-energy ion heads on F13 and F15 did not work as well as expected, and the counting statistics are not as good as most other DMSP satellites. Nonetheless, evidence indicates that the particle data from these satellites is generally reliable.

The DMSP series SSJ/4 particle detectors were designed and built by Dave Hardy and colleagues at Phillips Laboratory. JHU/APL has obtained this data largely through the World Data Center-A in Boulder, Colorado, but two missing years were supplied by Dave Hardy.

The DMSP particle data distribution efforts at JHU/APL are supported by NASA grant NAG04GN14G (SW) and NSF grant ATM-0344690 (CIM).
